Parts of a Good Golf Swing – Why Alignment Matters

The topic of this article is alignment and why it matters in a good golf swing. Alignment is the idea of lining up your golf ball to the spot that you want to hit. If you hit it perfectly, the ball will go exactly where you are aiming. Hitting the ball where you want it to aim is a huge accomplishment and will make you a better golfer. This is why I believe that alignment is an important part of a good golf swing.

The first thing you need to do with alignment is to fixate on a spot in the distance. This can vary. Your spot can be a tree, a flag, a person, a building, basically anything that you see in the distance. Once you pick your spot you will want to line up that ball so its directly on that line. I like to use trees or buildings that are in the background. This will give me a wider area to choose my line.

A question that you may be thinking is when do I pick out this spot? Do I wait till I’m set up besides the ball and ready to hit or do I do it before I am ready to hit? What I like to do and what I would advise is to stand behind the ball and pick out this spot before you are ready to hit. Occasionally, I’ll pick up my club so that it is perpendicular to the ground. Here the club is straight up and down and I can use the club to make a straight line with the ball and my spot in the distance.

Once you have this spot in the distance picked out in your mind. Now try to pick a spot that is closer to the ball that is also on that same line. I suggest making this spot about 1-2 feet in front of the ball. Once you have this spot try not to lose sight of it and get into your hitting position.

The next step is to align your body with the ball and the spot 1-2 feet in front of it. To perfect your alignment make sure your shoulders, hips, and feet are parallel with your ball and your mark in front of it. If you are parallel then you have the alignment figured out.

Now its time to wind up and let ‘er rip! Hopefully that ball will start out exactly where you want it. That is half the battle! The other half depends on where the ball is ending up. However, that is a whole new discussion. That will deal with club face, club path, and curvature of the ball. Those topics are a little more in depth and will be harder to learn.
